One of the things I love about weddings is how unique each one is, and how the personalities of the bride and groom come through. It's always so fun to see how people create such a special ceremony and party that is so them. Jon and Susan invited me to come shoot their ceremony up in Seattle at the Municipal court, and even though it was a quick ceremony and only a few hours shooting, it was lovely to see their personalities shine through, even with something as "standardized" as a super small ceremony before a judge and two witnesses (and me!). This was my first time shooting a ceremony at the Municipal Court and it was so interesting! Susan, Jon, and I were musing the whole time how strangely non-intimate it was with about seven other bride and grooms milling about (with their families, friends, and witnesses) waiting to be called. None of us had ever been to such a ceremony before, so it was quite funny seeing all these lovely brides in their white dresses hanging out in the same lobby!
The Municipal Court has a rooftop which you can access, and you can even have your ceremony performed up there if you like! We did some portraits beforehand up on the rooftop, but with the crazy heat we've been having here in the Pacific Northwest, we escaped back into the comfort of air conditioning before too long. Seattle was really bringing it with the vistas though. I've never been a big city gal, but my husband and I have been sort of itching to move to a true big city for a short period of time, just to experience it. I think I might love the woods and nature too much to settle down in a city, but the hustle and bustle are definitely something else!
Jon and Susan both had fancy shoes, but they also both brought some "wedding chucks," so we busted those out for some fun photos! Susan found these incredible sequined high tops at Nordstrom Rack (of course)! How fun! They went so perfectly with her flirty, frothy, white dress.
While I love the decor and festive atmosphere of traditional day-long weddings, a short and sweet city hall ceremony was just as lovely and definitely less stressful! I'd love to shoot more elopements and super tiny ceremonies like Jon and Susan's. They are just as full of love and heart and there's a sense of peacefulness in a small ceremony like this that's hard to achieve with the hustle and bustle of a normal wedding day.
Congrats, Jon and Susan! It was such a pleasure and honor to get to tag along on your special day! I hope your post-wedding 4th of July weekend was the best ever!
